Salt Cell (Chlorinator)

The electrolytic generator that converts dissolved salt into chlorine, the heart of a saltwater pool.

Salt cells (Pentair IntelliChlor, Jandy AquaPure, Hayward AquaRite) sit in the plumbing return line. As water passes through, an electrical current splits salt molecules, generating chlorine on demand. Cells last 3–5 years in Arizona's hard water; expect a $700–$1,200 replacement.

Saltwater pools are softer on skin, easier on equipment, and require less chemical handling — but you still need to balance pH and calcium.
