Rebar Cage

The steel reinforcement grid installed inside the excavated pool hole before gunite or shotcrete is sprayed.

The rebar cage is what gives a gunite shell its tensile strength. Arizona pools typically use #3 or #4 grade-60 steel tied on 12-inch centers, with double bars on the bond beam, steps, and any raised features.

A poorly-tied cage leads to cracking, leaks, and shell failure. Inspect the cage before gunite is sprayed: bars should be plumb, evenly spaced, and lifted off the dirt on chairs so they're fully encased in concrete.
